2 4.13 Listen and read. When does winter happen?
Fact File: Winter!
Winter is the season that comes after fall and
before spring. In the winter, there is less sunlight and
colder temperatures. Winter can bring snowstorms,
freezing rain, and ice.
In different parts of the world, winter comes at different times.
In the northern hemisphere, or northern part of the world, winter
begins around December 21st. This is the winter solstice—the day
with the least daylight.
It’s different in the southern hemisphere!
Winter begins around June 21st.
In countries near the equator, the middle of the world, there
are not a lot of weather changes. In Singapore, and many other
countries, it is warm almost every day of the year.
The coldest countries in the world are all in the north, like Russia,
Iceland, and Canada.
In Russia, it is so cold that your breath can turn intoice crystals in
the air! People also call this the “whispering of the stars.”
Hundreds of years ago, the River Thames in London was sometimes
frozen solid in the winter. There were “Frost Fairs” with shops on the ice.
There was music, dancing, and ice skating, too!
In 1972, there was a really bad snowstorm in Iran.
In one week, there was eight meters of snow!
