1 8.17 Listen and read. Is the story about something real?
Ivan the Inventor

Ivan lived with his mom and dad. He liked inventing
things. One day, he invented an amazing machine.
“Mom! Dad!” said Ivan. “Look at my invention. It’s a
vacuum. It can clean the house for you. It’s very special.”

“I can’t see it, Ivan. It’s not in the kitchen,” said
Mom. Then they looked out the window. There
was a vacuum in the sky.
“Hello!” said the vacuum.
“Great weather today!”
Ivan’s parents were very surprised. “I’m a really good
inventor!” said Ivan. His flying, talking vacuum was soon
very famous.

Writing Stories

Stories have a beginning,
a middle, and an end.

2 Read the story again and answer.
1 What did Ivan like doing? .
2 What machine did he invent? .

3 Was the ending happy or sad? .

3 Look at the story again and answer. Are these from the beginning,
middle, or end of the story?
1 Ivan’s vacuum was famous.
2 Ivan told his parents about his machine.
3 Ivan invented a flying vacuum that talked.
