Lesson 7 | Read the World CLIL History
1 Look at the pictures. What ancient culture do you think they show?
2 7.13 Listen and read. What did the ancient Romans do in their free time?
The Roman Empire was a huge and powerful place. Most of Europe,
Great Britain, and North Africa were part of the Roman Empire. We
know many things about ancient Roman culture!
Like many people today, the Romans worked hard
and had many different jobs. They were very busy,
and there weren’t any “weekends.” In their free
time, they enjoyed some of the same things we do
today. They liked to play board games. Children
played with toys like marbles, and people liked to
see plays at the theater.
One of the most popular things to do was to go to a
public bath. There, Romans talked with other people.
At the gymnasium, they exercised. After jumping
in a cold pool, they relaxed in steamy, hot water.
People watched sports together in huge
stadiums. A popular sport was chariot racing.
In the race, many chariots raced around a
track very quickly. The races were fast and

teams: Red, White, Blue, and Green.
Romans also watched dangerous gladiator fights.
The gladiators were very important in ancient Rome,
and many were rich and famous. Sometimes the emperor
of Rome watched the fights, too. He decided the winner

We enjoy some of the same activities as the Romans,
but many things are different now!
