1 5.17 Listen and read. How does the story make you feel?

Narrator: Katy and Karl were in the forest. It
                                was very hot.
                      (Katy and Karl walk.)
                          Katy: I’m thirsty.
Karl: So am I. Let’s stop and have a drink.
(Katy and Karl sit down and drink.)
Narrator: Katy and Karl were tired.
                          Karl: I’m sleepy.
Katy: So am I. Let’s sleep under that tree.
                      (Katy and Karl sleep.)
                      Narrator: But it wasn’t quiet
                                in the forest.
                      (Karl wakes up.)
Karl: Listen! What was that? Wake up,
                                Katy! I’m scared.

2 Read the play again and answer.
1 Who are the characters in the play?
                2 What is the setting?

3 Is it summer or winter? How do you know?
                4 Why is Karl scared?
5 What do you think he hears?

                     Writing Plays

When we write a play, we use stage directions to say what
actions the characters are doing. (Katy and Karl walk.)

3 Look at the play again and answer.
1 How many stage directions are there?
2 What actions do the characters do in the play?

4 Plan and write the next part of the play in your Workbook.
